Do you need a few soccer cake ideas for that upcoming team party? Don’t worry.

We’ve got you covered with a quick soccer cake recipe to crowd-pleasing party favors.

A Beginner’s Guide to Making a Soccer Cake

There’s an unlimited number of creative variations on a soccer cake. But to get you started, we’re going to give you a simple recipe that comes from parenting.com.

Follow the instructions, and you’ll have a soccer ball sitting in the middle of a soccer field.

The recipe requires assembling two cakes. Use whatever happens to be your favorite basic cake recipe to make the two cakes. One should be a sheet cake while the other should be a round cake baked in a glass bowl.

Items you’ll need:

  • 1 13 x 9-inch sheet cake
  • 1 round cake baked in a ½ quart oven-proof glass bowl
  • 3 cups vanilla frosting
  • 1 cup dark chocolate frosting
  • 1 cup Oreo Crisps
  • 12 ounces flaked coconut
  • 1 tablespoon warm water
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Green food coloring

What to do:

Add green food coloring to two and a half cups of vanilla frosting.

Spread the green frosting over the sheet cake.

Mix the flaked coconut with a tablespoon of warm water, green food coloring, and a touch of yellow food coloring.

Press the light green flaked coconut onto the green frosting of the sheet cake. You’ve now completed the soccer field.

Cut the top off the round cake to create a flat surface.

Flip the cake onto a wire rack so that the cake rests on its flat side. Place a pan or wax paper beneath the wire rack to catch excess frosting.

Heat one cup of vanilla frosting until it flows easily.

Stir the vanilla frosting and then pour it over the round cake. Make sure that there are no bare spots.

Allow the frosting to cool for at least 20 minutes.

Position the round cake in the center of the sheet cake.

Use the Oreo Crisps, which are hexagonal, to represent the dark pentagons of a soccer ball. The similarities are close enough to make the illusion work as long as you do use Oreo Crisps rather than Oreo cookies. Crisps are thin chocolate wafers.

Connect the Oreo Crisps by piping lines made of dark chocolate frosting.

Edible Soccer Ball Cake Decorations

If you’ve been waiting for technology to making cake decorating as simple as it has made every other modern human endeavor, your wait is finally over, thanks to edible ink.

Decorations made of food-grade ink are pre-printed on an icing sheet.  For example, you can order one that has a soccer motif that looks like you’re staring at a magazine illustration of a soccer field. You just peel and stick it to a sheet cake like you would a bumper sticker.

Welcome to the future.

Soccer Plates and Napkins

The party’s over, and all the guests have gone home. It’s now your turn to clean up.

If that sounds like anything but fun, keep the cleanup to a minimum with paper plates.

You’ll need a special plate for that soccer-themed cake. Use seven-inch dessert paper plates with a soccer design.

You can pair the dessert plate with a larger nine-inch paper plate for entrees. Both plates are available at walmart.com.

Are your favorite soccer players big eaters? If so, give them extra roomy 10.5-inch soccer plates from partycity.com.

All three sizes of plates come in packs of eight.

Don’t forget the napkins. But don’t settle for plain white napkins when you can give your guests napkins that match the soccer theme of your plates.

Walmart has napkins in packs of 16.

Soccer Party Favors

We’ve all received party favors that did us no favor. In contrast, here are a couple of gifts that will have people genuinely thanking you.

Soccer Party Favor: Water Bottles and Drinking Cups

When you’re in need of new ideas for a theme celebration such as a soccer party, you can get a bundle of ideas from Etsy such as personalized water bottles and cups.

Water bottles and cups are terrific items to personalize with the players’ names because they’re things that athletes will use again and again. Plus, they solve a problem. They give each player an easy way to distinguish his bottle or cup from that of teammates.

Bottles and cups are also ideal places to print commemorative and congratulatory messages such as ones referencing championships.

Soccer Party Favor: Candy

If your soccer team is on the young side, candy will always be a hit.

After a full season of self-sacrifice and eating correctly, what better way to salute their hard work than with a fistful of soul-satisfying sugary delight? Even the strictest parent has to allow every once in a while for a few calories.

Indulge your sweet tooth at candywarehouse.com where you’ll find every kid’s favorite categorized by type. There’s even sugar-free, gluten-free, organic, and kosher candy if you need to accommodate someone with dietary restrictions.

After you’ve chosen your candy, you can select a party favor bag from Party City. They have bags with soccer decorations making them perfect for your occasion. Fill the bags with your candy, and you’ll make a soccer team very happy.

Time to Get Your Soccer Party Started

The only thing left to do is slice the cake and pass out the party favors.

But make sure that you have plenty of both on hand because your guests are going to enjoy your party so much they’re likely to send it into overtime.
